Kimolos is one of the quietest Cycladic islands, so choosing the right area and hotel matters more here than on bigger, busier islands. Most of the best hotels in Kimolos are in Kimolos Chorio (the only main village) and around the easy-to-reach beaches of Psathi, Aliki, Kalamitsi and Bonatsa, which makes this list ideal if you’re planning a 2025 island-hopping itinerary that includes Kimolos and nearby Milos.

Forget big all-inclusive resorts. Accommodation on Kimolos is almost entirely small guesthouses, cave-like “sirmata” boathouses right on the sea, and simple Cycladic villas run by local families. That’s exactly why rooms sell out months ahead for late June, July and September – especially anything on the sand in Aliki, Bonatsa, Kalamitsi or Psathi.
Kimolos is often overshadowed by Milos, but it has a very different feel: slower, smaller and more low-key. In Chorio you still get real village life – kafeneia, bakeries and a handful of excellent tavernas – while the coast is dotted with tiny coves, fishing huts carved into the rock and a handful of beautifully restored beach houses.
BEST HOTEL IN KIMOLOS (OVERALL):To Rantevou Tis Alykis – the best mix of beachfront setting, value and easy access to several of the island’s nicest south-coast beaches.BUT ALSO CHECK (QUICK PICKS):
- For Beach (right on the sand):Boat House
- For Families:Alisea Resort (Aliki/Bonatsa area)
- For Couples / Honeymoon:The Windmill Kimolos
- Best View in Kimolos:Villa Argentosa
- Budget (without feeling “cheap”):Sardis Rooms
- All-Inclusive:there are no all-inclusive resorts on Kimolos
- Adults Only:no classic “adults-only” hotels – the island is naturally quiet anyway
Where to stay in Kimolos (areas explained)
- Kimolos Chorio (village) – the only real town on the island and the best all-round base if you like walking to tavernas and cafés at night. It’s a short drive to most beaches. You’ll find places like The Windmill Kimolos, Kambos House, Stella’s House, Villa Argentosa and Kimolos PS House either in or just outside the village.
- Psathi (port) – perfect if you don’t want to think about driving immediately on arrival. Psathi has a sandy beach, a couple of tavernas and the main ferry pier. Toffee and Psathi Blue Beta sit within a short stroll of the sea and work well without a car.
- Aliki, Bonatsa & Kalamitsi – a chain of relaxed south-coast beaches with low-key tavernas and some of the friendliest Kimolos accommodation. Alisea Resort, To Rantevou Tis Alykis, Bonatsa Beach House, KalamitsiView Studios, Sardis Rooms and Alikaki Kimolos all sit in this area. You’ll want a car or scooter here.
- Rema & Goupa (sirmata boathouses) – the postcard-perfect coastline with colourful “garages” cut into the rock. Boat House Kimolos PS, Astravi, The Elephant Beach House and a few neighbouring houses are literally steps from the water – amazing for swimmers and anyone who wants to wake up to the sound of the sea.
- Agios Nikolaos – a tiny harbour settlement on the south-eastern side of the island. Okeanis Kimolos is the main option here, a standalone house right by the water in a very quiet corner of the island.
Kimolos is part of the Cyclades islands and shares the same volcanic origin as Milos and Santorini, but it has remained largely residential rather than resort-based. Chorio itself sits on a hill, while the chalky coastline below is full of coves, caves and former mining sites, giving the island its distinctive pale rock and turquoise water.
Kimolos has only one main town (Chorio) and belongs to the volcanic Cycladic islands, along with Milos and Santorini. The island once had active chalk mines exporting to the rest of Europe and, according to local stories, silver mines as well. Today it’s all about slow travel, simple tavernas and long days at the beach.
Kimolos Island is not that far from Athens. You can reach it by taking a direct ferry from Piraeus (usually 5–8 hours, depending on the route) or by flying to Milos and then taking the 20–25 minute local ferry across to Kimolos. Always check Ferryhopper for the latest ferry schedules and Booking.com Flights for the most up-to-date flights to the Greek islands. You do need a vehicle on Kimolos. There’s only one local bus with a very limited timetable, and taxis are few. A small car is usually better than an ATV here (less dust, safer on longer distances), but if you’re comfortable driving, anything with four wheels will open up every beach on this list.

Very important things to know about Kimolos
- Best Area To Stay in Kimolos: The best all-round area to stay in Kimolos is in or around Chorio Town, as it has the most food options, a bit of evening life and easy driving access to every beach. See hotels in Kimolos Chorio.
- Best Hotel in Kimolos: overall, the most balanced option is To Rantevou Tis Alykis (great for beach-hopping, families and couples).
- Best Villa in Kimolos: Stella’s House if you want a compact Cycladic home near Chorio, and Villa Argentosa if you want space and the best views.
- How many days do you need in Kimolos? If you’re already coming to the area, 3–4 nights is ideal: enough time for Chorio, Rema/Goupa, Aliki–Bonatsa–Kalamitsi and at least one more beach day (Prassa or Mavrospilia). You can technically visit on a day trip from Milos, but staying overnight is where the island really shines.
- Best time to visit Kimolos: late May–June and September are the sweet spots – warm sea, fewer people, and better availability and prices. July and August are lovely but busier, with stronger Meltemi winds and far fewer last-minute rooms.
- How to Move Around in Kimolos: The island is small but has plenty to see, so you really need a car or scooter to move around. There is one local bus, but it’s not frequent enough to rely on for beach-hopping or evening dinners in Chorio.
FAQs
Is Kimolos worth staying on, or is a day trip from Milos enough?
Do you really need a car for these hotels?
If you stay in Psathi (Toffee, Psathi Blue Beta) or right in Chorio (Kambos House, Stella’s House, Villa Argentosa, Kimolos PS House), you can survive without a car – especially for a short stay. But to reach beaches like Mavrospilia, Kalamitsi, Bonatsa or Prassa comfortably, a small rental car makes a huge difference. For most people, hiring a car for at least a couple of days is the best strategy.
Is Kimolos good for kids?
Yes – in a low-key way. Beaches like Aliki, Bonatsa and Kalamitsi are shallow and generally calm, and there are no loud clubs or heavy traffic. What you won’t find are big kids’ clubs, waterparks or long lists of organised activities. Kimolos works best for families who are happy with simple days on the beach, short drives and relaxed evenings in Chorio or at a beach taverna.
Can you combine Kimolos with other Greek islands?
Absolutely. The most natural combination is Kimolos + Milos, since they’re only a short local ferry apart. From Milos you have easy onward ferries to Santorini, Folegandros, Sifnos and sometimes Paros. If you like quieter islands, a very good three-stop route is Kimolos – Milos – Folegandros, flying in and out via Athens.
How far ahead should you book Kimolos accommodation?
For July and August, book 3–6 months ahead, especially for tiny properties such as Boat House Kimolos PS, The Elephant Beach House, Villa Argentosa or The Windmill Kimolos – they have very few rooms and many repeat guests. For June and September you can sometimes find good options a month or two out, but it’s still worth reserving as soon as you’re sure of your dates.
