Santorini Wine Museum: An Honest Review

Updated On:

The Santorini Wine Museum is one of the best museums in Santorini and one of the only 8 wine museums in the world, so it’s really worth a visit in my opinion. The Museum itself is basically the Koutsogiannopoulos Winery that has been transformed into an exhibition hosting lots of items, machinery and human-sized wax models showing in detail the wine-making process in Santorini the last 200 years. In my honest opinion, it’s a real gem for anyone visiting the island and easily one of the best things to do in Santorini. After the catacombs of the Museum itself, you will enter the wine-tasting area where you can taste the wines that are produced by the Koutsogiannopoulos winery, along with some yummy greek nibbles.

I recently visited the Santorini Wine Museum and took lots of photos, so here is everything you need to know:

There are several wine-tasting packages you can select from as you enter the museum. I went for the cheapest option that costed 20 euros

BEST WINERY TOUR OF SANTORINI: Guided Tour to 3 Wineries

The Santorini Wine Museum in the town of Vothonas in Santorini island basically hosts lots of items, bottles, barrels, machinery and real models demonstrating the process of wine-making in Koutsogiannopoulos winery, which is one of the oldest on the island. I will be honest with you: some people think the models are kind of creepy, but I think they are pretty well made for what they are! Yes, they are installed in some underground catacombs and eery tunnels, but they are very well made and they provide a lot of context into what you are actually seeing. Don’t expect a Madame Tussaud’s level of craftsmanship on these mannequins, though!

Many people think that mannequins in Santorini Wine Museum are kind of creepy but I think they really add a lot to the experience.

Is it actually worth visiting this Museum?

10000%. Let me make this clear: if you have time to visit only one winery in Santorini then you should visit SantoWines Winery just outside of Pyrgos, but if you have time for more then it’s a great attraction (getting on a guided winery tour is highly advisable as you will see more than one winery in a few hours!).

Conclusion

So…do I recommend this Museum to anyone visiting Santorini? 1000000%!

This is a real gem in my opinion and a must for everyone visiting Santorini for the first time as it’s a very unique museum that you cannot find elsewhere. Yes, the models may look a bit weird but some real effort has been put into making this an interactive and unique experience in my opinion. The dining and wine-tasting area of the Museum (Koutsogiannopoulos Winery) is really comfortable and cute but to be frank it doesn’t have the amazing views of SantoWInes Winery or Venetsanos Winery. However, it is an overall very unique experience that even combined with a guided winery tour is totally worth, in my opinion.
