Do people speak English in Greece?
Yes! Almost everyone under 60 speaks at least basic English, especially in tourist areas. English is taught in schools from a young age. In hotels, restaurants, and transport hubs, you'll have no issues communicating. Even many taxi drivers and shopkeepers know enough English to help you.
What are some useful Greek phrases to know?
Learning a few Greek words goes a long way:
- Yassas (YAH-sahs) - Hello
- Efharisto (ef-hah-ree-STOH) - Thank you

Entry Requirements & Visas
Do I need a visa to visit Greece?
For stays under 90 days, visitors from the US, Canada, Australia, UK, and most EU countries do not need a visa. You'll need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date. Starting in 2025, non-EU nationals will need ETIAS authorization for Europe.
What about the new ETIAS system?
The European Entry/Exit System (EES) for all non-EU nationals is expected to start in October 2025. This will require fingerprints and photos on your first visit, creating a digital record valid for 3 years.
When to Visit Greece
What's the best time to visit Greece?
The best time depends on your preferences:
- Late April-May & September-October: Ideal for most travelers - pleasant weather, fewer crowds, moderate prices
- June-August: Peak season - hot weather, busy attractions, highest prices, but everything is open
- November-March: Mild weather, fewer tourists, some island services closed, great for mainland exploration
