Thassos is a very unique island that doesn’t belong to any of the famous greek island groups (such as the Cyclades, or Sporades, Ionian islands or Dodecanese islands). The island has some of the greenest landscapes in Greece and it’s full of history and incredible sandy beaches nested in small pine tree bays. It’s an island that is mostly visited by people from northern Greece and it is pretty unusual for people who live in Athens to pick it for their holidays as it’s difficult to get there from Athens.

Thassos is one of the islands furthest from Athens and quite difficult to reach from Greece’s capital. The main reason for that is that there is no airport on the island and there are only two ferries connecting the island to mainland Greece: one ferry from Kavala town and another one from Keramoti town. So, if you really want to go to Thassos the best way would be to get to Kavala first (it has an international airport) and then take a direct ferry to Thassos (always check Ferryhopper for the latest ferry schedules and Booking.com Flights for the most up-to-date flights to Greek islands).

I highly suggest you rent a car in Thassos, as it’s a pretty big island with many things to see, do and explore. There are local buses on Thassos, but you’ll obviously be more flexible if you rent a car, in my opinion.
