How To Get From Santorini to Mykonos in 2017
If you are looking on what’s the best way to go from Santorini to Mykonos (or vice versa) then search no more as this is the Ultimate Guide for 2017
Chances are you thinking of visiting Santorini or Mykonos this year but you are probably overwhelmed with the lack of proper reliable information on how to get from one greek island to another.
The best way to get from Santorini to Mykonos is with a ferry boat.
The journey takes about 2.5 hrs and there are several ferries you can take throughout the day.
You can always check the timetables and find the ferry that suits you on Let’s Ferry Website.
In general, it doesn’t take more than a 3 hours ferry to travel between all the Cyclades islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios and Milos islands.
Travelling to the West Greece islands (like Corfu, Zante, Kefallonia or Lefkada) is a whole different story as these are on the other side of Greece and you have to go through Athens and take a (1hr) flight to visit them.

So let’s see all the available options to get from Santorini to Mykonos, shall we?
OPTION 1: FERRY FROM SANTORINI TO MYKONOS (always check Let’s Ferry)
I always advise people to take the ferry from Santorini to Mykonos.
It’s pretty convenient and reliable.
The ferry takes about 2.5 hrs to arrive to Mykonos and there are about 4 ferries per day from Santorini to Mykonos, especially on the summer/high season from May-September.
You can check all the timetables on the Let’s ferry website and book the one that is more convenient to you.
Always remember: you cannot board the ferry with your online print-out. You have to pick up the ticket from the ferry departure port, from the kiosks of the ferry company you booked. That is the greek law unfortunately. The ticket print-outs have to be printed only by certified companies (any travel agency in Greece can do it for you too).
These are closed-type ferries with airplane type seats.
That means you cannot really sit outside (like you do at the bigger Bluestar Ferries).
It’s like sitting at an airplane or a bus in a way.
You will be given a numbered seat with your ticket.
These guys documented the whole thing on this video:
However I do believe that the ferries are pretty expensive in Greece but it is almost a monopoly within these companies and unfortunately these are the market rules that we all have to play with…
So, the cheapest ferry ticket from Santorini to Mykonos in 2017 costs 66,80 euros per person , one-way (check updated prices here)
Obviously if you want to spend a couple of days in Mykonos while you are staying in Santorini then it will cost you 123.60 euros per person (to go and return) which is a considerable amount of money (ok…money is a relative thing but if you are a family of 4, we are talking about 534,4 euros in total which is basically close to the minimum monthly wage in Greece…)
OPTION 2: FLIGHT FROM SANTORINI TO MYKONOS (Expedia has all the options)
Taking a flight from Santorini to Mykonos is also an available option but not ideal in my opinion.
But the way the flights have been scheduled for 2016 is pretty strange.
There is only 1 flight per week from Santorini to Mykonos in 2017, every Friday evening 6:35pm – 7:05pm from Condor (only available between May and October).
Here is the only flight from Santorini to Mykonos this year:
As you can see it’s only 30mins on the air, which is fine.
Santorini Airport Code: JTR
Mykonos Airport Code: JMK
But the thing is that there are more flights from Mykonos to Santorini this year (Expedia has all the options) than there are from Santorini to Mykonos!
Here are the flights from Mykonos to Santorini this year:
In my opinion , it’s really not worth it to take a plane from Santorini to Mykonos.
You will finally spend more time on the check-in process at the airports than you would spend on the sea with a ferry (and trust me…the tiny airports of Mykonos and Santorini can be super crowded and chaotic between May-October…).
Here is how landing at Mykonos Airport looks like:
The Best Way to get from Santorini to Mykonos and back is by taking a ferry.
It’s only a 2.5 hrs trip and there are 4 ferries per day to choose from (in the High Season May-October).
You can book your ferry ticket from Let’s Ferry but you have to pick up the ticket print out, from the ferry company kiosk at your departure port.
The ferry companies that operate between these 2 islands in 2017 are Seajet and Hellenic Seaways which are closed type ferries with airplane type numbered seats.
You can always take a plane between the 2 islands but it’s really not worth it in my opinion and there won’t be any benefit either in time or time. In case you want to book a flight from Santorini to Mykonos you should always check Expedia which has all the available flights.
I always remember when I was a kid visiting the greek islands with my family on a ferry.
I still get butterflies on my stomach and excitement when I see the ferry slowly departing from the port while I am sitting in it.
It’s probably because my brain has connected a ferry boat with awesome holidays…
The thing is that I do get the opposite (sad) feeling when I am leaving my place of holidays. Whatever…
For some weird reason, I cannot get any of the same feelings when I board on a plane…
Also, think about this:
You will be taking planes for the rest of your life, but how often to you get the chance to take a ferry on the blue sea waters between the amazing greek islands? 🙂
