santorini to mykonos

If you are looking on what’s the best way to go from Santorini to Mykonos (or vice versa), then search no more as this is the Ultimate Guide.

Chances are you are probably thinking of visiting Santorini or Mykonos this year, but you are probably overwhelmed by the lack of proper reliable information on how to get from one greek island to another, or what people call “greek island hopping”.

In my honest opinion, the absolute Best Way to get from Santorini to Mykonos is by the fast ferry that takes 2 hours to arrive (usually SEAJETS Ferries are the fastest).

Here are the 2 options you have basically:

How Long It TakesCost*
Ferry (FAST)
(usually SEAJETS FERRIES)
2 to 2.5 hours50 to 90 euros
Ferry (SLOW)
(usually FAST FERRIES, MINOAN LINES but there can be more companies)
2.5 to 3 hours 50 to 60 euros
Flight 🛑there are no flights from Santorini to Mykonosthere are no flights from Santorini to Mykonos
*Obviously the cost fluctuates a lot and may differ; always check Ferryhopper for ferry costs and Booking.com Flights for flights

Everything that I am explaining in this post applies to the opposite route from Mykonos to Santorini (but with different times obviously).

If you are wondering how it is inside a ferry to the greek islands then here is my complete tour of the Highspeed 4 Ferry (interior and exterior)

So, here are a few things you should know about the trip from Mykonos to Santorini (and vice versa):

  • How Long is the Ferry From Mykonos to Santorini: about 2 to 2.5 hours and there are several ferries you can take throughout the day.
  • Hydrofoil from Mykonos to Santorini: there is no hydrofoil from Mykonos to Santorini. There are only closed type ferry boats which you can book on Ferryhopper website
  • Between April-October there are more than 4 ferries a day from Santorini to Mykonos ; there are far less ferry options in the winter (November-March)
  • In general, it doesn’t take more than 3 hours by ferry to travel between all the Cyclades islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios and Milos islands.
  • You must book your ferry online and you can then enter the ferry with the barcode that will be on the email that will be sent to you. This will be clearly written on the email you will receive from Ferryhopper and it is now the system that most ferry companies use BUT some smaller companies may ask you to get a printout from a kiosk that is outside of the ferry and it is this print out that will allow you to enter the ferry. As a rule of thumb, if your ticket you got through email from Ferryhopper has a barcode then you can enter the ferry directly.
  • Travelling to the West Greece islands (like Corfu, Zante, Kefalonia or Lefkada) is a whole different story as these are on the other side of Greece and you have to go through Athens and take a (1hr) flight to visit them.
  • Flights from Santorini to Mykonos: there are no flights between these 2 islands the last few years but this may change in the future so if you really want to fly check Booking.com Flights for the most up to date flight schedule
  • Strikes in Greece: strikes can happen anytime in Greece and for any means of public transportation within short notice; usually, they may happen on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays; yes, they may mess up your trip but they are necessary for the hard-working people of Greece so that they can have decent salaries and benefits for their lives. So, get over it and try to find some alternatives for your trip (a taxi is usually the best option).
  • Strong Winds – Ferries Cancellations: in case there are strong winds (which can be pretty common in August in Greece), then the Greek Port Authorities may stop all ferries from departing, so bear in mind this is also a possibility that can mess up your trip; as an average there might be 4-5 days during the summer months that this can happen so get prepared
  • Business Seats on Ferries in Greece: in my opinion, they are not worth the extra money as you only get a bit more space and a slightly quiet area to sit but even the standard seats are very spacious
  • The Ferry Schedule for all greek islands is announced only 2-3 months before the actual trips, so if you cannot find any scheduled ferries for your trip 3 years from now, please check again 2 months before your actual trip.

So let’s see all the available options to get from Santorini to Mykonos, shall we?

You really have 2 options from Santorini to Mykonosby ferry or by plane

SANTORINI TO MYKONOS FERRY (always check Ferryhopper)

I always advise people to take the ferry from Santorini to Mykonos.

It’s pretty convenient and reliable.

mykonos port
People waiting at the New Port of Mykonos for their ferries

The ferry takes about 2.5 hrs to arrive to Mykonos and there are about 4 ferries per day from Santorini to Mykonos, especially on the summer/high season from May-September.

The ferry companies that run between Mykonos and Santorini are Seajet and Hellenic Seaways.

You can check all the timetables on the Ferryhopper website and book the one that is more convenient to you.

Here is an example of timetables from Santorini to Mykonos:

santorini to mykonos ferries timetables
This is a typical Ferry Schedule from Santorini to Mykonos in the summer months (May, June, July, August, and September); Seajets are always the fastest ferries from Santorini to Mykonos

Notice there are different ferries on different days from Santorini to Mykonos but usually the Seajets are always the best and fastest option

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

If your ticket from Ferryhopper (that you received through email) has a barcode on it then you are good to enter the ferry straight away with that. But some smaller ferry companies don’t have a barcode ticketing system yet so you just have to go the kiosk opposite the ferry )it’s in everyport) to get the printout.

If you book your ticket through Ferryhopper, you are going to get a link through email where you can download the tickets with the barcode that looks like this (it will open up in your browser, and you can just screenshot it); this ticket will have your seat number as well, and it is individual for every passenger, so kids and vehicles will have their own barcodes and separate tickets

These are closed-type ferries with airplane type seats.

That means you cannot really sit outside (like you do at the bigger Bluestar Ferries) as there is very limited outside space.

It’s like sitting at an airplane or a bus in a way.

You will be given a numbered seat with your ticket.

inside the Seajet Ferry
seajets ferry greece
Seajets Ferries are usually the fastest to any greek island (that also applies for the ferry from Santorini to Mykonos)
highspeed ferry greece
Highspeed Ferries are not always available for the trip from Santorini to Mykonos)
luggage space ferry greek islands
There is always racks to put your luggage on any ferry but these are not locked sapces so you need to be careful

However, I do believe that the ferries are pretty expensive in Greece but it is almost a monopoly within these companies and unfortunately these are the market rules that we all have to play with…

So, the cheapest ferry ticket from Santorini to Mykonos is: 66 euros per person , one-way (check updated prices here)

Obviously if you want to spend a couple of days in Mykonos while you are staying in Santorini then it will cost you 123.60 euros per person (to go and return) which is a considerable amount of money (ok…money is a relative thing but if you are a family of 4, we are talking about 534,4 euros in total which is basically close to the minimum monthly wage in Greece…)

Check here all the updated Ferry prices & Timetables from Santorini to Mykonos on Ferryhopper website.

OPTION 2: FLIGHT FROM SANTORINI TO MYKONOS (Booking.com Flights always has all the options)

NOTE: This flight between Santorini and Mykonos comes and goes. It seems that it is not available anymore (but it may come next year…)

Taking a flight from Santorini to Mykonos is also an available option but not ideal in my opinion.

Chances are that there won’t be any flights between these islands but do check Booking.com Flights.

The schedules of flights between these islands can be really strange.

Here’s why:

There was only 1 flight per week from Santorini to Mykonos a few years ago, every Friday evening 6:35pm – 7:05pm from Condor (only available between May and  October).

This was the only flight from Santorini to Mykonos recently.

As you can see it’s only 30mins on the air, which is fine.

Santorini Airport Code: JTR
Mykonos Airport Code: JMK

But the thing is that there were only flights from Mykonos to Santorini in 2019 (Booking.com Flights has all the options)!

Here are the flights from Mykonos to Santorini now:

Check Booking.com Flights for the latest flights schedule.

In my opinion , it’s really not worth it to take a plane from Santorini to Mykonos or the opposite.

You will finally spend more time on the check-in process at the airports than you would spend on the sea with a ferry (and trust me…the tiny airports of Mykonos and Santorini can be super crowded and chaotic between May-October…).

Here is how landing at Mykonos Airport looks like:

CONCLUSION

The Best Way to get from Santorini to Mykonos and back is by taking a ferry. Hands Down!

It’s only a 2.5 hrs trip and there are 4 ferries per day to choose from (in the High Season May-October).

You can book your ferry ticket from Ferryhopper but you have to pick up the ticket print out, from the ferry company kiosk at your departure port.

The ferry companies that operate between these 2 islands are Seajet and Hellenic Seaways which are closed type ferries with airplane type numbered seats.

You can always take a plane between the 2 islands but it’s really not worth it in my opinion and there won’t be any benefit either in time or money.

In case you want to book a flight from Santorini to Mykonos you should always check Booking.com Flights which has all the available flights, but chances are that there won’t be any flights between these 2 islands.

I always remember when I was a kid visiting the greek islands with my family on a ferry. I still get butterflies on my stomach and excitement when I see the ferry slowly departing from the port while I am sitting in it. It’s probably because my brain has connected a ferry boat with awesome holidays… The thing is that I do get the opposite (sad) feeling when I am leaving my place of holidays. Whatever… For some weird reason, I cannot get any of the same feelings when I board on a plane…

Also, think about this:

You will be taking planes for the rest of your life, but how often to you get the chance to take a ferry on the blue sea waters between the amazing greek islands? 🙂

THE CHOICE IS YOURS !
